Following a game first check the pitch for spikes that have fallen from players shoes and other hard objects which could harm machinery.

The pitch should then be swept to remove loose soil and plant material.  Swept material should be collected and removed from the square.  If this is grass material it should be disposed of in your clippings pile.  If it is soil material keep the sweepings as they can be used in repairs or for soaking up wet areas of a pitch.

If you have a rotary roller mower you can use this to help to clean a pitch as it will act like a vacuum cleaner.  You should however sweep and retain the soil from the ends first.

You will find that the detritus from the pitch will probably extend over at least half a pitch either side of the pitch you are cleaning as it spreads with the non-striker’s footwear, wind etc.
