Eye Protection
On average 1000 injuries to people’s eyes occur every day! 75% by impact, 10% by ingress of foreign bodies (dust) and 15% from chemical burns.
Why: The majority of eye injuries can be prevented if eye protection is worn.
Outline: This talk will cover: Hazards and the advantages of wearing eye protection.
Potential hazards to the Eyes
- The use of hammers and chisels (Contact from flying debris).
- The use of compressed air and any gas of vapour under pressure.
- Work conducted using abrasive materials (abrasive wheels) where sparks may be generated, or wheel might explode at speed.
- Work with any tools that will result in chippings being broken off.
- When welding ultraviolet light is given off, causing retinal damage, welding spatter can burn the eye.
- The handling of or coming into contact with corrosive or irritant substances, such as acids, alkalise and other chemicals.
- Handling and use of cartridge tools.
- Cutting wire or metal strips under tension.

Wearing Eye Protection
- You have a legal obligation to use the eye protection provided in accordance with health and safety regulations.
- Do not enter areas where eye protection is required unless you are wearing suitable eye protection.
- Ensure your eye protection fits and is suitable for the task.
- Ensure any eye protection issued is maintained to a good standard.
- Ensure that any damaged, lost, or unserviceable eye protection is reported and replaced immediately.
- Ensure that eye protectors are comfortable to wear and are clean.
- If you do get some foreign object in your eye, use the eye wash provided or get assistance from a qualified first aider.
