Poor housekeeping results in untidy work practices, untidy work practices result in accidents.

Why:    Poor housekeeping can result in injury due to the presence of trip hazards, workplace obstructions. Poor housekeeping can also increase fire hazards and other risks.

Good housekeeping makes a workplace more efficient and enhances the enjoyment of tasks and can enhance the pride of the workforce.

Outline: This talk will cover housekeeping in all work areas as well as fire safety.

 

Q: Define Housekeeping

Assessment of the Risk – Compare a clean, tidy environment with an untidy one and make note of the extra risks.

Poor housekeeping will affect any workplace. Inside and outside – give examples.

Adequate provision of storage facilities is essential.

Storage racking must not be loaded in excess of its designed specifications.

Uneven or poorly maintained floor covering causes trip hazards.

Provide waste containers and ensure these are emptied regularly to prevent spillage.#

 

Q: What causes trip hazards?

Corridors and passageways must not be restricted. Maintain minimum 1.2m clearance for emergency evacuation.

Pay particular attention to small/tight areas.

Supplies must be correctly stacked in order to maintain clear access.

When not in use return equipment to correct storage area, keep a ‘clear work surface’ policy.

Pay particular attention to correct storage of flammable and harmful chemicals.

Housekeeping in Workshops/Stores/Work Areas

Equipment being repaired is not to obstruct gangways or fire escape routes.

Spilt oil causes slip hazards ensure any spill is cleared immediately; this includes the spill granules.

Ensure the correct container is used when decanting fluids.

Combustible materials are not to be stored in a way that increases the fire risk.

Clear up after completing work, leave the area, as you would wish to find it.

 

Fire Safety

Fire safety can be easily compromised due to obstructions to fire escape routes and exits.

Combustible/Flammable materials are to be stored in an appropriate fashion.

Fuelling vehicles/machinery should only be conducted with adequate ventilation, preferably outdoors.

If due to work fire extinguishers or emergency exits are unavoidably obstructed, then alternatives must be provided.
